FAQS

  • What’s the difference between a hosted tour and just using local guides?
Guides are awesome and local, & we use and love them, but a host takes us to the new level of concierge in a trip. Imagine your entire trip led by a world traveler who knows the country and speaks the language, AND is a personality from the US who meshes all the special events together with special picks for dinner, happy hour tunes, and insider’s bucket list items that might be difficult for casual travelers to find after the main event of the day is over. Not to mention, you have access when you need it anytime during the tour to make your time even more memorable.
  • If I’m a solo traveler, do I still get a great hotel room?
Of course you do! We never pick a small room for our solo’s. You’ll enjoy the very same beautiful accommodations we choose from the world’s leading hotels.
  • I love the tours you host but it looks like they’re geared for couples, and I’m a solo traveler. Is that a problem?
No one is ever alone on a Highroads Traveler tour! That’s why we host them personally. Our great itinerary allows friends, solos and couples to enjoy time together.
  • I want to see the world, but I don’t love big buses and cookie cutter itineraries.
Highroads Traveler is for you! Our groups average 12 and are never more than 20. We travel in comfy vans that get us right into the heart of the action, and by action we mean the finest curated sites, activities and dining that only real insiders know!
  • I eat Gluten Free. Will I still be able to enjoy the great restaurants you choose?
100%! Domenica herself eats Gluten Free and we always have an eye out for allergies. The incredible fooderies we choose will always have allergy-free options for us.
  • We pride ourselves on staying fit and like to workout each day to stay in shape. Will the boutique hotels in UNESCO locations have facilities for us?
Good question! As an Army Ranger, I build daily fitness in as well, and wherever we stay will either have a fitness center onsite or close-by. And we’ll have lots of optional early morning walks to breathe in the momentous surroundings of our great locations.
  • Do I have to hike and bike my way through the trip?
No, ha! Highroads Traveler tours focus on our 4 fancies: Culture, History, Food, & People. Dress up the way that makes you feel sparkling and enjoy UNESCO sites, cultural sites, and bucket list events. No hiking or biking needed to get there.
  • How active do I need to be to enjoy the tour?
Remember, we ‘re not hiking, biking, or embarking in adventure sports. You’re here to relax among shops and markets, and sojourn to world-renowned landmarks! If we ride Vespas in Rome or trot on horseback in Cuba, you’ll always have an option to hop in a comfy vehicle with your guides.
  • I’m not sure what to pack, especially if we’re traveling for 12 days.
Great question! Experienced travelers pack specifically and not generally. That means counting your days and picking whole outfits. Normally that still gives you great flexibility to mix and match. You know there’s always a few quality pairs of slacks and sweaters that look great with different outfits. That leaves you room to pack a couple of fantastic evening outfits or sport jackets. Now factor in that many of our 5-star hotels offer laundry service and you are on your way to packing efficiently!
  • Do I need to pack swim wear? Jackets? Raincoats?
Our thorough Trip Detailer will always give you a day by day description of everything we’re doing so you’ll know we’ll be going to the Roman baths and need swim wear, or be ferrying to the Irish Aran islands and need a rain jacket. And of course at dinner we’ll always look forward to seeing you in upscale resort wear that matches your sparkling personality!
  • Will there be lots of activity? What about free time?
The beauty of Highroads Traveler tours is that each day typically features a bucket list item that will leave you spellbound, and then allow you free time to meander and enjoy time to explore.
  • What is hosted small-group travel? Should I care?
Yes! Forbes Magazine calls small-group travel “the fastest growing segment in the travel industry”, and we agree! People love enjoying our incredibly curated cultural experience of global travel, and doing it with like-minded friends who also adore Culture, History, Food, & People. You can hang out as much or as little as you like!
  • How does your trip differ from other high-end tours?
People choose Highroads Traveler who seek Culture, History, Food, & People in desirable destinations throughout Europe and Caribbean. Our guests are usually seasoned travelers who enjoy deeply authentic experiences beyond typical tours. We travel in a small group with intimate local knowledge of the locations; and safely that is paramount for our guests.
  • Should I choose a Highroads Traveler tour if I’ve already been to that country?
Chances are you had a great time no matter what you saw the first time. Bravo. But…there’s no substitute for a curated tour of all the best things a destination has to offer. Efficient but never rushed as you revel in the glory of world-famous landmarks and cuisine. Hop along and you’ll see what we mean.
  • Can’t I just plan my own travel?
Of course you can! And you should if you love the thrill of research and trial-by-error travel. But if time, talent, and treasure are precious to you, then climb aboard our insiders’ tours that take you directly to the world’s greatest sites, events and food without FOMO (fear of missing out). And not a worry about logistics, travel, & tickets…just fun.
  • I’m excited to visit a new foreign country but I don’t speak the language. Is that a problem?
Language is never a problem on a Highroads Traveler tour. Nearly 100% of the places we travel speak great English. But as a bonus, Joe is comfortable in all of the languages of the countries we travel to and has developed a way for travelers to easily learn the key travel phrases for all our destinations.
  • What’s the easiest way to learn a few words of the local language to enhance our experience?
You’re in luck. Joe developed a little hack called the “15 Most Important Words” for his 3 boys 10 years ago for when they traveled and wanted to order gelato and say thank you, so he created little laminated cards with EZ phonetic pronunciations only! They fit in your pocket.
  • I’m new to currency exchange before a trip. How do I do it?
Exchanging currency is so much easier that it was traditionally at airport exchange desks and US banks over the years. It’s as easy as using the ATM at your destination’s airport when you arrive. Those ATMs are reputable and will dispense local currency. *Bonus: choose a US debit card that does not charge ‘foreign transaction fees’ and you’ll get the best rate and no extra charges.
  • Do I need to bring a lot of cash with me?
You won’t need large sums of cash on a Highroads Traveler tour – just enough for your shopping, incidentals, tips and stuff like that, and the places we travel will always have reputable ATMs nearby.
  • Cancellation: What if I need to cancel?
Plans can change. We always recommend you secure your logistics with trip insurance that covers cancellation for injury or illness, and we help by offering it on each of our tours.
  • Am I covered by health insurance overseas?
All policies differ, and you should check first with your provider. Then, in the event you want to augment your regular insurance, we help by offering additional coverage you can choose for each of our tours. Click here for more information.
  • Does booking with the AMEX card provide cancellation insurance?
Owners of the AMEX do love the great feature that offers them cancellation insurance booking flights and travel.
  • Do you offer travel insurance for your tours?
Yes, we offer travel insurance through a trusted provider, Insubuy. If you're interested in learning more, just click here for more information and options to ensure your peace of mind during your journey.
